Palm Unveils New ‘Nova’ Software ‘Palm Pre’ Phone

(PALM) on Thursday unveiled its long-awaitednew software for touch screen smartphones and a new phone as the ailing firmtries to rejuvenate its faltering business. The new Palm software named Nova will be used to build smartphones thatfeatures both a touch screen and a full QWERTY keyboard that slides out fromunderneath a large touchscreen. The first of which is called Palm Pre. “This will redefine how people use smartphones” said Ed Colligan Palm’schief executive officer. Palm considered a pioneer in the smartphone market is in need ofrejuvenation and some analysts see the new Nova software as its best shot inyears.

Vietnam Pushes pen-source Software for Government Use

At least half of the employees at those agencies should be able to use the programs by the June deadline VietnamNet reported. By the end of 2009 70 percent of the workstations in local state agencies should have the software installed with 40 percent of employees proficient in their use. Vietnam is aiming for all employees to be trained to use the applications by the end of 2010. PC sellers have also been ordered not to install pirated software on computers sold to state organizations part of a multi-year push by Vietnam to stop the use of unlicensed software. Vietnam has put a priority in recent years on promoting the use of open-source software with an eye to developing its own software outsourcing industry. In 2004 Vietnam approved a four-year plan that called for training in open-source software to be promoted in universities and government agencies along with participation in international open-source software organizations.
