Although the details were murky the FBI gives enough clues to show that Aleynikov designed software for Goldman Sachs' program trading arm. Promised a job at triple his $400000 annual salary he downloaded the secret codes he had developed presumably on behalf of a generous new employer who is reportedly based in Chicago. All this happened in the space of a few days in early June and involved only 32 megabytes of data. But they were important megabytes: The program involved uses "sophisticated mathematical formulas to place automated trades in the market" the FBI affidavit says. Those trades typically generate "many millions of dollars" each year.
