Schlumberger giving UW software valued at $73M

University officials announced Thursday that the software will be used in the College of Engineering and Applied Science’s EnCana Reservoir Simulation Laboratory. Construction of the new lab begins this month. Dean Robert Ettema says the software from Houston-based Schlumberger will enable undergraduate students to study oil and gas reservoirs in an environment usually reserved for graduate students. The university says using industry-standard geology and geophysics software will broaden the skill set of geoscience and petroleum engineering graduates.

The company consults with the construction medical property management and retail industries and also acts as a marketing channel for software vendors looking to reach buyers in those industries. The company moved with four employees and hired four more upon arrival in Austin said Chris Thorman social media manger for the company. Thorman said Software Advice will likely grow in its new home and plans to add new employees over time. The company’s founder and president Don Fornes said it made sense to move Software Advice from California to Austin because of the city’s favorable business climate and quality of life.
